Transmission Remove/Rebuild Tips?

Post by blurple124 »

Hello All,

My next project is going to be replacement of some parts on the transmission. Thus, I will need to take it out and apart.

To those who have experience in doing this kind of job, what tips or techniques have you used?

What is the best procedure for actually getting the transmission out of the car??

Answers to these questions will be extremely helpful. I am trying to get all of my info in one place, though I know it is all out there somewhere!

Yes, everything is fully together at the moment. I am starting right from the beginning - a driving car.

remove positive lead from the battery

remove central console and transmission tunel cover. also remove gearstick

remove propshaft.

undo two nuts holding a little crossmember to the floor at the end of a gearbox. now it will tilt backwardsa together with the engine

undo speedo cable and reverse light switch cables.

undo small bolts that connect flywheel cover plate to a gearbox

take a couple of extensions, rachet, and u-joint for rachet in order to reach bolts holding gearbox to the engine and starter bolts.

when everything is unbolted, gearbox will drop out with a little jiggling and pulling.

It always sounds so much easier than I know it will be....

What special tools will I need for disassembling the tranny? I have the shop manual, and they spec out tools for compressing spring washers. After doing the rear brake calipers, this scares me the most. If I absolutely need anything, I'd rather order it now and have it ready.
