Pad Springs or Sticky Shims?

Post by blurple124 »

I just finished rebuilding all four calipers a couple of weeks ago. I replaced brake hoses and bled the lines. I put excessive amounts of anti-seize on the shims during re-installation. Cleaned the tracks, too. The springs were not replaced (should have been!)

During left turns, particularly, and sometimes in right turns, but never while driving straight, I hear the front driver's side pad scraping on the rotor.

Could bad springs be responsible for this noise, or is is a different problem?

It is a '78, so I have the longer springs.

usually deflection on turns means there is looseness. Are the wheel bearings tight?

This is easy, ya just need to take it apart and see what is shiny, every thing else is just guessing. And as was said, bearings too loose can contribute. But if you can hear it rub, something wrong.

I just replaced the bearing on the opposite side and repacked the drivers side, so both hubs were off last summer (not much driving since.

I am pretty confident that I torqued everything down properly, but perhaps it has loosened up?

What else could cause deflection? If that is all it could be, then chances are good I screwed up. I'll take a look at it this weekend.

Found it. The bolts for the front left caliper yoke didn't have washers on them. The bolts scraped on my brand new rotor when the piston wasn't pushing it in.

Now i have to have a brand new disc turned. At least I'm assuming that is why it is pulling to the right now.
