blurple124,
I've never rebuilt a tranny, or even taken one apart, but from my limited knowledge, it sound like something with the lay shaft.. 4th gear is 'straight through' on our trans, so the power isn't going through the lay shaft. With 1,2,3, its definitely going though the lay. Not sure how 5th works.
Of course, I could be completely wrong. Never taken on apart.

Re: Transmission Question
Hi majicwrench,
It was my tranny that was rebuilt/overhauled not blurple124's, his hasnt been apart or inspected yet.
But your comment about doing things ourselves from now on is duly noted and thats exactly the way I will be moving forward with all my repairs from now on.
When buying replacement bearings I will take them to the engineering shop for them to measure, is it surfice to say that they are from a transmission for them to determine the make up of a bearing which is suitable for purpose, I presume that there are lots of similar size bearings but they have different design characteristics.
regards
keith

Re: Transmission Question
Right, my transmission has not been rebuilt, to my knowledge.
I also believe it is the layshaft/countershaft for the reason you have mentioned. I have the shop manual and read through it enough to find that out as well.
I am surprised, though, that there is no noise under power if it is so loud when driving the engine.
So next question: do I only replace what bearings are bad, or do I spend that cash to do them all? And on the point of the previous comment, how do I get the best value? Are ebay bearings the same as any other?

Re: Transmission Question
Hi Guys,
Update,
Based on the input in this thread I decided to strip out my tranny to see what bearing(s) was causing the problem. I must admit that prior to undertaking the work I was a bit unsure of what to do but the guys on here convinced me that with a bit of common sense that it was fairly straight forward to do.
When everything was apart it was evident that there was some wear buy only very slight wear to the input shaft bearing, I soon realised that the culprit was the needle bearing that joins the input and main shafts, there was a lot of free play in this bearing which in turn caused the input bearing to wear. You will recall that I said that I had someone else rebuild the tranny 18 months ago, well on inspection I could see that he did indeed replace all the bearings except one, you guessed it the needle bearing, on examination it was not a new bearing so he must have just re-used the old one which was worn.
I have replaced the needle bearing and input shaft bearing re-assembled the tranny and there is no free play in the shaft. I have filled it with 90 wgt GL1 oil, all gear select smoothly.
I cant road test it yet because I have other work to do on the car so wont get the tranny back into for a few weeks, but when I do I will post and let you know how it runs.
Thanks again to all who posted on this thread, it was very helpful.
