82 FI motor rebuilt; back in car and starting running OK BUT there is an unnnerving rumble from the bell housing area that disappears when I touch the clutch . Have put in new spiggot bearing; new clutch and new input bearrings for gear box. Could I have put the thrust washer in the wrong way ? -- I can;t XSR%%^&* remember!
QUESTION: can you get to the thrust washers by dropping the sump with engine in place or do I need to remove the engine and take the flywheel off etc ??

Remove the transmission
Re: THRUST WASHER -DONT' LAUGH
pry back and forth on the crankshaft pulley to check for end play. The thrust washers are accessed with the oil pan off, removing the trans won't help at all

If you are talking about the conical thrust washer that is between the bell housing and gearbox, then yeah the trans needs to come out to remove the bell housing. If you think it is a problem with the thrust washer in the engine then Mark is correct.

Re: THRUST WASHER -DONT' LAUGH
Thanks guys It is the crankshaft thrust washers -- I.m worried that I might have put them in the wrong way . On running it again today the sound is intermittent - so I'm hoping it might reduce with time . Clutch and gear change is very smooth - a complete change from before the rebuild
Re: THRUST WASHER -DONT' LAUGH
Like Mark said, if the thrust washer is omited, the crank will have play fore and aft. Both of my thrust washers were the same size, they are marked. They do have small V machined in them, to collect and keep oil against the crankshaft. But I don't think it would be a problem without seeing alot of end play in the crank, which can be checked externally. You did index the auxiliary shaft?

Re: THRUST WASHER -DONT' LAUGH
Hi thanks for the replies: I can't feel any end play in crankshaft and yes the auxiliary shaft was lined up properly on assembly Maybe I.m just paranoid and I'll see what happens to the noise over time. Thanks again
