I am finding this a bit strange.
I have the dual points distributor with no vacuum advance and the mechanical advance is below the contact breaker plate.
According to my discussion with the guys at Pertronix, their kit will work with my setup.
Can we see the image you sent them Ken?

Re: Distributor number
I hate p-bucket!
I tried to view your images and it just isn't working.
Yes, I do have an account.
And out of curiosity I went out and wiped off the base of my distributor.
The number on mine says its a S144CBY.
Which is a good number according to the Pertronix catalog.

Here are the number on mine and they said it won't work but for $300+ they could make up the unit:

Re: Distributor number
Send me your distributor and the unit and I'll make it work for $150. Haha, just kidding. All Pertronix would do is drill an extra hole in the "C" shaped mounting plate so a screw can pass through and thread into a hole in the points mounting plate. However as others have stated it will work, and I don't even think drilling an extra hole would be necessary.
A 1976 and a 1978 are both dual point models and if it fits a 76, it will fit a 78. The 76 and 78 are the same exact distributor with the same advance curve, the 78 has a higher serial number as it was manufactured 2 years later...only difference.
Ken, as with many aftermarket parts, (shocks are a good example) many times the manufacturers don't know and can't confirm what cars their parts fit. Or even that the parts have physically changed despite a name change.

Re: Distributor number
The Pertronix app guide lists the S144 distributor as one that will work.
Go for it Ken.
Buy two and I'll install both. One for you and one for me.

Re: Distributor number
I have the same problem. I have a S144RY and waiting to receive a Pertronix kit.
Say, where do I have to drill the hole in the mounting plate? Or perhaps it's self explanatory when I get the kit
