Loosing coolant

Post by dmwhiteoak »

From the first day That I brought it home my car looses about a quart of coolant every 500 miles. I have no leaks and no sign of a bad head gasket. Not even condesation out of the tail pipe. It never runs hot because I stay on top of this. Is this normal ?

this is not normal. If you are not loosing it thru the head gasket, you've got a leak.

Thanks, I will continue to look for leaks and maybe pull the plugs and take a closer look.

You can check for exhaust in your antifreeze with:

check for white/greenish deposits on the undersde of conections between rubber hoses and other elements in engine compartment and on cabin heater. it's likely that there is a leak but fluid evaporates because of the heat of the engine before you get to notice it

As djape1977 said, I had a small coolant leak but couldn't figure out the source because nothing was dripping on my garage floor. I finally spotted the location of the leak -- lower nut that connects the heater pipe to the water pump was loose. The coolant would evaporate before hitting the floor. I didn't notice it because my upper alternator bracket is polished aluminum so it didn't show the telltale white deposits.
