Add me to the stripped thread in the lower thermo housing bolt club. Will experiment with thread insert into the coolant outlet. Quick question....which is easier - remove the radiator to drill into the outlet or remove the outlet from the engine and then drill? Would think the latter, but worried that makes me vulnerable to four more bolts that currently do not leak, but might after I remove them?
I am chalking this all up to the experience of not trying to improve stuff that wasn't broke in the first place. Successfully installed an external thermostat this weekend (PO had removed all thermos and installed a block at the T), but decided A) to install a new coolant temp switch with a reduced threshold for turning on even though my car had no overheating issues with the old switch, and B) painting my belt cover a beautiful shade of yellow, resulting in removal of the coolant T that had not previously been leaking.
I had a list of four must do repairs before venturing from Virginia to Long Island for FFO, with a sixty day lead time. I am now down to 38 days and the list has grown to 10. Wish me luck.

TIP: Try a slightly longer bolt. This worked for me recently.
