Bran100's head

Post by BEEK »

received the head today, unpacked and torn down, began cleaning.

the first 2 pictures are of the head as received

Image

Image

then torn down, this head was 100% original, no one has been into it ever, still had oem seals and gaskets, hard as a rock :)

Image

this was the first sign of trouble, when i pulled the water neck, there was no gasket left, and lots of corrosion

Image

the combustion chamber with valves still in

Image

and with valves out, note how clean the intake passages are, have to love efi!

Image

valve seat details

Image

note the coolant passage above the exhaust seat

Image

head out of the cleaner, this is what i found, i media blasted it to get a better look

Image

this is how it looked before, note it was completely filled with corrosion

Image

this is after cleaning and some grinding to see what was left
the red arrow shows deep pitting
the yellow arrow shows the pitting growing to the edge of the head
the green area is how much margin is left between the cooling passage and the outside of the head
the blue area is how close the sealing ring for the combustion chamber is to the cooling passage

Image

this is what it is supposed to look like

Should we be using some anti-corrosion treatment in our cooling systems on these cars? Or do the modern coolants, "Prestone", etc have enough?

You are suppose to flush the system and add new, every 5 years or so,that's in any car

green coolant, ethylene glycol, should be flushed and replaced every two years. Electrolysis will eat away that ridge under the water tee and the coolant passages in the head

Do you change the valveguides on many fiatheads when you grind the seats?

i only change the guides when they are worn, usually only the brass ones wear. the cast guides for the most part dont wear. Every once in a while they do, and i will replace them
