I have a broken gear in my differential. I don't know the name of it, but it's the fist shaped one at the front of the others. Is it the spicer gear?
None of my manuals show how to tear down and repair the unit, so I can't see how it would come out, other than taking the whole thing apart, which I would rather not do. If it came to that, I'd rather just replace the unit. Does anyone have a source for the procedure (including the gear names...lol) to get to this gear?
Thank you,
Ron

Re: Rear end question or two
Go to vickauto.com and download the free catalog for the fiat. On page 28 is a pretty good pic of the dif and the gears. They also have the parts.
Hope that helps a bit.

Re: Rear end question or two
it all has to be disassembled on your car to replace gears. The front gear is called the pinion gear, it mates up with the ring gear. There are spider gears that allow the wheels to turn at different speeds when turning. Usually it's the pinion that loses some teeth

This is a repair best left to a driveline shop. Shop for a used diff.

Re: Rear end question or two
You nailed it Mark. I opened the inspection cover and found a couple pieces of the gear teeth laying in there. I've heard that it's a bigger job than I may want to tackle so I'm going to have to start looking for a used one to swap out. Thanks for your input Vandor.
Anyone in the southland have one you're willing to let go? Heck, even Central Ca., it would make a nice get away for Krissy and me.

Try Auto Italia in California. Lenny usually has a few rear ends.

Re: Rear end question or two
Thanks guys.
It looks like I'm doing a swap with Dave Voss for a good used one he has. At least at this point. I did contact Lenny but haven't heard back from him yet. Now comes the fun part. Off with old, on with the new.
