Winding sound

Post by ORFORD2004 »

The car is back on the road and now i have a winding sound from i think the rear. It is worst around 60MPH and when i give just little gas. If i remove my foot from the gas, the sound goes away.
Things that was done during winter: Oil and front oil seal from the differential. GL-1 oil.
Fork, synchro and oil from the transmission.
Bearings are almost new.

Any ideas?????

if the pinion nut wasn't re-installed properly then you have incorrect preload on the pinion bearings and that will cause a whirring noise

Was the GL1 oil put in the differential or in the transmission. Differential should have 80/90W EP oil.

Typically people will not get the pinion nut tight enough. Proper procedure likely involves removing ring gear, using inch/lb torque wrench etc. yes it is a bit involved to get it perfect.
How did you tighten nut??

I end up changing the rear end with the one from my 79 parts car. No more noise :D
On the differential i can see 43/12. Is that mean 3.58 ratio?????

Below is from page 00-11 of the Fiat Factory Shop Manual:

Note that transmission is 80/90 non EP which is GL1. Rear Axle is 80/90 EP which is a standard gear oil.
