Broken Throttle/Carb Linkage

Post by hamlet »

Was driving and the accelerator pedal just went dead. Pulled the car over and saw that some PO had welded the carb linkage from the throttle. Seems like a bad idea, doesn't it? Well, it was. I'm trying to figure out how to get the part that's next to the coil on the carb. I'm not having any trouble finding the part of the linkage that you can see on the bottom mid-right, I think. Can someone give me a recommendation?

most of the spherical joint you see are plastic. If you search the web, you can find generic ones. My suggestion is to see if any fiat people have a good ball. drill out your current one and tack the new one from the back.

I don't think I understand what you mean. The problem is that the throttle linkage was welded to the bellcrank and that weld broke. I'm interested in finding a bellcrank that I can replace that one with and hook it up to the throttle linkage securely

Did some more digging around and this appears to be the lever for the carb/throttle linkage. I'm having trouble finding a replacement, though. It appears to be item #25 on here: http://www.artigue.com/fiatmedia/carbs/32_ADF.pdf

There are some linkage repair kits, but I don't think they contain a repair for this. Will this work?

The VW kit will not work. You a better off seeing if someone in the fiat community has the part on an old carb. I have a few carbs, but i dont have than one. Go to Mirafiori.com and plead your case. there are a lot of old school collectors on that site that might be able to help you. If all else fails, remove the part from the carb and take it to a welder to see what he can do. The only usable part from the VW kit is the 8mm ball, and if you can find the arm, it will have a good ball on it. I think you are right, it is #25 in the pictures. Good luck

Interesting, it's the same kit as the one sold by Allison Automotive

"This kit is needed when adapting a Weber or Empi 32/36 carburetor to a Fiat. It includes a universal lever, a threaded linkage rod, 2 ball studs with quick disconnects, and return spring. It can be used on any Weber or Empi carburetor, including IDFs."

Ok, so I investigated further, and I've got it down to just replacing that lever. The problem is, I can't get it off. Any idea how I'm supposed to pull this thing off the throttle shaft?

Got the broken part off: http://imgur.com/a/1pCC3

Should I consider having this welded back together?

Weld and grind. Make sure you maintained the original position. To not start the engine until you make sure all the links are working perfect.

Got a replacement for the correct part coming, but in the mean time I made the linkage kit above work by putting the plate at the end of the throttle shaft and putting the nut on the end just after it. The distance from the ball to the linkage rod is the same as with the original part, and the car runs fine. I'll put the correct part on when I get it, but until then it runs. Woohoo!

I was able to get the part from a guy on mirafiori -- and the carb is running even better than before -- thanks everyone!
