I took the chrome air filter off and there was a lot of oil sitting in the bottom of the 'pan' that is bolted to the carb. I'm also getting a fair bit of smoke out the tailpipe and the plugs look a little rich. I believe what is happening is the oil is being drawn form he crankcase vent hose into the carb. Right now I have a hose that goes from the crankcase to the air filter. There is not a oil separator or breather filter or one way valve, just a straight line.
I've read a bunch of the posts and am thinking this is not a proper connection. What is the proper setup?

Re: oil residue in Carb air filter
all my carb 124s had a hose from the crankcase oil separator to the air cleaner. the hose also had an internal flash suppressor. Even with the separator, you will get some oil in the air cleaner with an old engine.
