jack and stands points

Post by westy64 »

Sorry if this has been asked already, but it is not clear to me.

I know the jacking point just ahead the rear wheel.

I know it is also the right place to place a stand when the car is lifted by a jack.

But if I want to use this place with a stand, where do I put the jack, to lift the rear wheel ?
I want to bleed the brakes and I need available and safe space under the car to do it.
I know the answer fot the front.

thank you in advance.

here is how I jack the rear Image

my understanding is that when you bleed the rear brakes the axle needs to have weight on it so you can place your jack stands on the axle

this is what the jacking points look like

How about the front? Especially if you've installed the oil pan protector?

A low-profile aluminum floor jack will roll under the oil pan and allow you to jack the crossmember in the centre, right behind the oil pan.

Yes! Key words are low profile. If you shop at Harbor Freight, they make a variety of jacks, and fortunately they list the dimensions on the outside of the box. There is a 3-ton for I think about 70 bucks (?) that I bought 2 years ago that just gets under there and does a great job, but you still have to come in at it a little from the side if you have a spoiler installed.

I bring mine in from the side, at an angle, with the floor jack just behind the left front wheel/tire.
I lift using the front cross-member.
That gives me room to crawl under the front of the car with no jack in the way.

Yep, same here. Put the jack stands in for safety though, NO CINDER BLOCKS! Had a scare as a foolish youth with those stupid blocks.

as extra safety I always recommend putting the tires/rims under as well  and always let someone know what you are doing

Just a point of clarification...

It is the brake regulator that necessitates that the rear axle be under load to bleed the rear brakes. Without weight on the rear wheels the regulator will not allow fluid to pass.

However, many have bypassed the regulator. If this is the case, the weight bearing requirement is no more.
