This won't probably work but I am stuck as to what recently broke.
One the way home from a drive a new noise made itself known.
Metal grinding kind of noise emenating from the engine,
I tried to isolate the source using a stethoscope but was unable to discern anything.
It does it when the car is standing still
Engine probably has less then 1000 miles in it. Head was professionally rebuilt. Bottom end was reassembled by myself.
A machine shop did the hard stuff.
The link below goes to a youtube vid of the noise (18 seconds). It is a bit muted so crank the volume if not at work.
This is a long shot but I am presently stuck as too what to try next and I am afraid to drive it.

Compression is still good. All cylinders appear to be firing ok. Plugs all look ok.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated as to what I should check,
Thank you

Re: New Ugly Noise
sounds like something is loose and rattling. go thru all the bolt on stuff and see if you can find something loose. sounds like sheet metal.

Sounds like a rattle? Mounting nut somewhere loose? Radiator mount, etc?

Re: New Ugly Noise
In person the noise is much louder then it appears in the vid. Much louder then a loose nut.
It does have a rattle characteristic to it though.

Re: New Ugly Noise
sounds like a pulley rubbing on something. Have you listened to the tensioner bearing, water pump and alternator with the stethoscope?

My engine made a similar sound... the water pump pulley was loose.

Re: New Ugly Noise
Check for missing spacer/standoff on bottom timing belt cover bolt, mine was rubbing on the pulley and belt until I added the spacer. Made an odd noise.

Re: New Ugly Noise
I went back with a stethoscope again to check the suggestions and while none of them panned out I think I found it.
The exhaust pipe slightly separated from the end of the header and the header and pipe are vibrating against each other. The joint is encased in a clamp that completely wraps around the joint so it is not obvious.
I had it completely separate once before. This time it looks like it separated 1/2"
The clamp I have is tightened almost as far as it will go and I think it needs help. I was considering drilling a hole where both pipes overlap and putting a screw in. Not sure if I can get a drill in the space though.
Has anyone experience with Exhaust Cement/Sealers. Permatex makes one that says it seals and sets up like a weld to hold the parts together.
Thanks again.

Re: New Ugly Noise
I used the sealer in my poor college days. Sealed many a rusty muffler hole with that stuff. I wouldnt use it for a joint. you need to take it apart and it also needs some flex. I would be trying to figure out why your current clamp isnt doing the job. Are you missing one of the asbestos washers. (I know they arent asbestos anymore )
