A few months back I noticed sounds coming from the rear axle area...I asked this forum and was told that it sounded like it could be the u-joint. I put the rear up on jacks and proceded to look (with my very untrained eye) for something 'wrong' with the u-joint. I couldn't find anything, but I kept looking (day, after day, after day, etc), until I needed a breather from it all. I left the rear jacked up for a few weeks, and now it seems that the transmission is worse - I'm having a lot of issues shifting. Could this be from having it jacked up so long, or is that wishful thinking?
**Update** Just took her for a short spin. Ran fine, until I shifted to 2nd. Shift was noisy and shifter vibrated. Got up to speed ok, until I shifted. She's back in the garage. Help!

Re: Transmission Sounds?
Thanks for the tip, I will be checking the fluid level this weekend. What is GL1 & where would I find it?

Re: Transmission Sounds?
I'm not convinced the tranny would turn south that fast. Most 124 issues are with the shift forks being worn and the car popping out of gear. I would take another look at the u-joints. when they are just being moved by hand out of the car, they can act just fine, but will vibrate like crazy once up to speed and torque. may want to bite the bullet and replace them before you get into expensive tranny repair.

Re: Transmission Sounds?
Shifting issues could be clutch related.
Vibration issues may be a disintegrating rubber flexjoint (just behind the transmission). If this one lets go it can cause a lot of damage! Check it now! Look for missing chunks or cracks.

Re: Transmission Sounds?
Ok...sorry for the delay. Had a hard time getting the transmission oil bolt off but finally did. Added GL1 (didn't take too much to fill). Got her back on the ground...started her up...backed out of the garage and headed down the street. Not 50 yards later she decided she was done. Now, it seems that she's stuck in gear. Can't push her forward nor backward. Had to call AAA to tow it back (I know...50 yards!!!) to my garage. Any ideas? Anybody know of someone in the Austin TX area that can help? I know almost nothing about cars. Help! Please?
Re: Transmission Sounds?
Tell us about how you filled the transmission with oil, first of all. Sounds dumb, but it might be something in that. You should drain from the two plugs, then close those up, then fill

Re: Transmission Sounds?
There is a Fiat club in Houston with several members in Austin and San Antonio. The club corresponds via email.
If you send me an email I'll put you in contact with Mike who can put you on the list and you can ask if any local Fiat owner can take a look.
bye,

Re: Transmission Sounds?
No need to make up minds. EP additives are to be avoided, as they may attack brass synchros etc. GL1 has no EP additives.fiat218 wrote:I thought you where not suppose to use gl1 in the tranny
