Transmission 2nd Gear

Hello,

I took the 81 Fiat for a first time spin now that it doesn't quit. I noticed that 2nd gear seems to grind when i shift upshift or downshift. other gears seem fine. Clutch grabs at the very final inch or so of the release. double clutching does not seem to make much difference. Would clutch adjustment help or is this likely a sign that the 2nd gear synchro is out? are they hard to replace? car has around 100k miles on it. Thanks again for the replies.

Not likely that a clutch adjustment will make any difference. Most likely you will need the synchro slider and or the second gear itself. It is possible to have a bad shift fork also.

Thanks. That is what I thought. is the best place to get tranny parts International Auto? Is it hard to remove the tranny. thanks,

what oil are you using? try changing to the recomended oil first, it cost's a little less and may just solve the problem..

HEllo,
The retainer spring broke causing the synchro to float. Replaced the synchro and spring. everything else looked good according to the tranny rebuilder.
