1978 spider cooling fan wont come on

Post by carman1957 »

Hello, I've read as much as I can on this topic. I took her out of storage after 3 years and she fire right up. It took a while but she past 190 degrees and then climbed to red. I checked the fan by bridging the terminals and the fan ran perfectly. While warming up the top hoses were hot and the lower hose near the heat sensor switch was definitely cooler. When she went red the bottom hose was hotter. My next attempt a day later I took the rad cap off and ran her no air bubbles and the rad was full.

I hear a lot about burping the rad and could be a faulty heat sensor or relay. I drove the car my 3rd attempt on the freeway and the car maintained a great temp of 190 degrees as soon as I idled the car it climbed to red and again no fan.

Where am I going wrong ?

Thank you

Hello again. One thing I noticed there was no visible movement of fluid moving while the rad cap was off. Just a little overflow out of the rad.
Thanks again.

If you leave the terminals jumped and the fan running, does the car still overheat? When it runs, does it blow hot air? If not the radiator may be plugged up.
BTW, I would shut it off when the gauge is about 3/4 of the way up. Don't wait until it's in the red! You are asking for a blown headgasket.
I don't think you would see a lot of waterflow with the cap off, or at least I don't remember ever seeing a lot of flow.

Thank you I will try tonight to see if the fan jumped will effect the temp while running.

Hello Vandor, went to start her up to check her temp and No Turn over. Starter gone. Rebuild time. This car has been great to me in the last 25 years. I left her alone to long this time around. I'll get back to you in a few days once the starter is rebuilt. Thank you
