Hello Everyone! What a great place to share information!
Hello Everyone! What a great place to share information!
Just over a year ago, I purchased a 1969 124 spider from the original owner. It had a pile of mechanical receipts, a new top, carpets, seats and a dash cap (poorly fitted). Everything works and it runs and drives beautifully. Unfortunately, the paint and body were crying out for attention and wanting to do it right, I visited numerous body shops till I found someone I thought would do it properly. I realized as we got into it that I needed to pull the windshield frame to paint underneath and replace the glass and rubber, then it was the gas tank, now the engine and suspension are out of the car and are being detailed too. At this point I'm committed (or should be:) to a complete rotisserie restoration. Now the devil is in the details in trying to make the car as close to how it came out of the factory. The chrome has all been redone, as have the gauges and I'm having a new walnut dashboard made. The original dash, radio console and lower console are being redone by Just Dashes. The few parts I still need to find are the wire ties in the engine compartment and a period correct radio faceplate and knobs. I'm sure there will be more I realize I need as it goes back together. With a little luck we'll be at the Concourso Italiano In Monterey August 15th. Thank you all in advance for any information or help in completing this fun (so far:) project!

I too have an August deadline. Woodward Dream Cruise 2009! Seems more sane to me.

It sounds like a great project. I don't know how lucky you'll be finding those wire ties. They crumble as soon as you touch them and they're not reusable. I'm in the process of parting out a 72 so I may have a few odds and ends to help you along.
Good luck with your project and please take plenty of pics!

Hello artrite, welcome to the forum. Great to hear that there are others like me who want to keep the car as original as possible. Not that there's anything wrong with mods, but an example of a restored to original Spider is a thing of beauty. Good for you. Keep us updated on your progress.

Wow, thanks for all of your input and support. I am aware how ambitious my project is, but most of the work is done and the paint gets sprayed next week. It may not get to the point I hope by the Concourso, but there's always next year. I'll get some pics posted in the next few days. And yes, I'm on the west coast:)

ART, try a CB / Ham Radio shop. they used to use the same old-style zip ties that the auto industry did.
