Maserati Coil is Hot!!!!
Maserati Coil is Hot!!!!
SoCalMark hooked me up...AGAIN!
HIGHLY recommended swith to this coil if you have any starting issues.
My old coil output was 12k volts, this new Maserati coil is 30k +...YIKES!
After trying to figure out my starting issues (hot car would not start for crap after sitting 20 minutes) and putting on new plugs and a float adjustment...this coil did the trick!
FYI

definitely an under-appreciated mod! We've done this to several cars now, with excellent results every time

Re: Maserati Coil is Hot!!!!
Gents,
So what are we talking about here ?
Simply replacing the stock ignition coil ( that's rated at 12K ) with a more powerful unit rated a 30K, is that correct ?
So that the HT leads end up delivering a higher voltage spark to the spark plugs via the dizzy ?
Does this mean a better spark and better burn in the head ?
Regards

no Maseratti coils currently, but I've found several other e-coils that work as well

Re: Maserati Coil is Hot!!!!
the Ford DuraSpark coil works well and can be found at your local Pick-a-Part wrecking yard. I've also used Toyota and VW e-coils. One advantage to the Maseratti coil is the mounting bracket makes it easy to adapt to the Spider. The DuraSpark coil will fit in the stock heat-sink on the electronic ign Spider
Re: Maserati Coil is Hot!!!!
The maserati coil is the same marelli coil that is used on the F.I. Lancia Zagato, so you could say that it was meant to be used on our fiats.

Re: Maserati Coil is Hot!!!!
I am puzzled about coils. I check the resistance across the low tension, and it runs about a quarter ohm or so for one without a ballast and maybe 2.5 ohms for one with a ballast. But the high tension resistance (ht out to + in) runs anywhere from 8,000 to 15,000 ohms. So does it matter (a.) if I use one that needs a ballast or one that does not, and (b.) does the high tension resistance mean a better output to the plugs? Why the variations? What makes a coil better or worse than another?
PO put a blue coil on my '81 FI, with a ballast, but I'm not sure it is a good choice. I have a bosch one from a VW Golf, and I like the look of it and it fits the stock heat sink better, but can I switch?

Re: Maserati Coil is Hot!!!!
Well with my current starting issue I want to replace my coil, but I can't tell if you guys are talking about electronic or points distributor Would it burn up points? When I go to the parts store now they always want year/model etc, it's not like the "good old days" where you just told the gent behind the counter and he didn't even have to look up the part half the time just went and grabbed it..... I am afraid if I tell them I want a Ford Duraspark they will demand to know what year etc ....
Thanks
