MegaSquirt choice
MegaSquirt choice
OK, I'm ready to get into some tuning. I want to start this year with the install of a MegaSquirt computer on my '83. Question. Which MegaSquirt is the best between v2 or the micro v3. What lenght of harness should I take (3,4 or 8 feet)? And which sensors I should replace or install? MS230-K kit with MapDaddy4 upgrade from diyautotune.com was the one I had in mind. This is the only improvement I want to do this year. I should be OK around 650$, right? Next year, it's gonna be the exhaut line and headers. (Probably Mark's stuff). Won't touch the head or pistons for now. Not until I'm decided to go with a supercharger or not. No turbo...I think. Of course, I'll have remove the air filter and replace it by a K&N kit but excepted that, only the computer will be replaced. So should I go for v2 or micro v3. Or even pay more to get v3.57?

Re: MegaSquirt choice
there are some here that have done the conversion, I have MS2, as MS3 was not available.babu2001 wrote:Ooookkkkkkkk, seems nobody knows about MegaSquirt version...
I bought mine already constructed with all the goodies as I couldn't be stuffed with the soldering iron.
You can use you existing sensors, I have actually made a jumper to keep my original harness (time will tell if that is a good idea or not). You will need to change your TPS and I would recommend adding a wide band O2 sensor and also getting your signal from your crank via one of Jason's from Milers mule setup so you can either go wasted spark or COP.
If I were to do it now, I'd go for the MS3 (the logging alone is a good feature), and possibly think about replacing all the harness as some of the wires are quite brittle by now. Get a long harness and measure twice then cut to suit.
With regard to the AFM, you can either have the tension so the door flap is always stuck open and use the temp sensor only (but the AFM is a restriction in the system) or remove it altogether in which case you will then need an Air temp sensor.

Running MS2. Removed MAF and installed air temp sensor. EDIS wasted spark. Agree with getting the harness a litle long. The only thing that we did not do with this was keep the O2 sensor. In hindsight that was a mistake, Car runs well with the current mapping and the megasquirt really made some engine mods drivable for every day use. The other thing I would consider would be a custom plenum. For some reason the air intake has limitations around 7200 - 7400 rpms. This is a hot topic and people can argue about the design and cfms. Engine needs more air to reach full potential. I'm getting about 28 mpg out of an 82' that has 138 HP to the wheels.

I won't need custom plenum, I won't go over 7000 RPM anyway. Don't like to sound like a Civic I've finally ordered the 3.0 in kit (I'm very good with electronic so I'll save some $ there). And compare to the 3.57 using SMD, I'll be able to repair it if needed. 2 quick questions.
The AFM will go away. Where did you install your air temp sensor? Which model?
Which model of wide-band O2 sensor are you using?

In the intake tube for the sensor and innovate for o2 sensor.

I was planning to stick the Air temp sensor in the Airbox just before the air filter and I used the innovate LC-1 wideband 02 sensor. Many have had problems with them, I think I am lucky.
If mine does go bung I'd go Tech Edge http://www.techedge.com.au/ next, they are an Aussie company and have impeccable backup service should anything go wrong.

I'd stick the air temp sender just behind the air filter in the tube. I think you will get a much more accurate reading just inside the filter compared to just outside the filter. However, if your keeping the original airbox in-tact and not moving to something like a K & N filter than it problably does not make any difference.
