No Oil dipstick markings

I'm getting a rough start on the car and I'd like to check the basics before diving into disassembly of engine parts!
But...the oil dipstick has no markings on it. It does however have an odd shape on the bottom.
It narrows about an inch and a half up from the bottom, then widens back out an inch up from the bottom to normal width.
Is this narrowed area an indicator?
There is no hatching, no line and no circles to be seen.
Plus, the oil on the dipstick seems quite low, but maybe it isn't...can't tell with this stick!

The dipstick on my Spider has marks to make it easy. In your case I would drain the oil and fill it with the amount specified in the manual and then check the dipstick. And... don't ever, ever forget where it came to.

Agreed, A lot of the dipsticks even if marked may be inaccurate based on changes to the dipstick over the years. Consider putting a mark on the dipstick your self by just touching it with a dremel once you fill the engine to spec.

A dented oil pan might make it settle at a slightly higher than wanted level, but my guess is this is not too significant.
