I would look for the leak before it catches fire
I had a Ford F250 with a 7.4 liter, carb engine and 4.10 rear end....that managed 7mpg.

Re: My mpg is about 11 to 12
I had two issues that contributed to mileage issues, and my mpg improved noticably after fixing each one. First was carb adjustment. I started with too rich a mix, and once I got that ironed out, my mileage improved. Second was a fuel pump leak (mechanical pump). I now run about 17 - 19 mpg, which is still not real high compared to other numbers I've seen on the forum.
Obviously it will depend on your car. If you're driving an FI car, then the carb and mechanical pump issues are not going to apply, but you can look for equivalent kinds of issues (clean your injectors, etc.)

i would think it is a carb car and would start with carb adjustment as mentioned above. After tinklering with the carb try tracing the fuel line to make sure you don't have a leak. the Bosh L-jet FI system is pretty good on a stock car so if it is FI I would not think that is your issue or you would have a lot of other issues/problems with drivablity. Fuel injectors not closing or leaking. Check fuel pressure as well. If you are dumping a bunch of gas into the cylinders it has to go someplace if not fully burnt. Does your oil have a strong gas odor? Does the exhaust have gas odor? It could be your ignition timing? Do you have excess balck smoke coming out of the tail pipe at start up and does it go waya after warm. Even a dirty air filter can cause poor gas mileage as the air to fuel mix is thrown off. Sorry, could be a ton of things.

Re: My mpg is about 11 to 12
It is a spider 124 1978.
i drive it normal (not a heavy foot)
I dont see or smell any gas or any drops on the floor (PO ran the gas lines from the inside of car to the out side)
I think is just burning too much gas
any one have simple easy way to adjust the carb (in a basic form).
Thanks

Re: My mpg is about 11 to 12
Is this something new or has the car always been this way. My first thought is to pull the main jets and check the size with a numbered drill bit to see if anyone drilled them out. If not, i would arrange to borrow a set of smaller ones and give it a try. When I first bought my 70/1438 the carb ran so lean, it would buck on acceleration. The local fiat mechanic drilled out the mains and the problem improved. He drilled them out a second time and the problem went away. My fuel economy went from 30 to 20.

Is the car buring a good amount of oil along with high gas consumption? Have you taken the car on a long drive to determine if your high fuel consumption improves if the car is warm and operated for a period of time? 10 gallon tank should run out of fuel at about 120 miles at 11/12 mpg. It would be interesting to see if you drove 100 miles straight on a full tank how much fuel you are burning compared to stop and start trips of a few miles. have you checked your plugs?

Re: My mpg is about 11 to 12
I get quite a change in my gas mileage from in town, back & forth to work & the store vs. when on the highway, sustained distance driving.
I Will only get 16-18 MPG around town on the quick 10-15 minute trips, never really getting warmed up & some good foot down driving between the lights (getting into the secondary on the 32/36 doesn't help either).
Where as I have gotten 25-27 MPG on road trips, even sustained speed, 5th gear for an hour or two.
I even got 24 MPG going from Coeur d'Alene Id. down to Clarkston Wa last weekend (250 miles, 5 hours) up & down many grades (Lewiston grade is 6-7% for 7 miles) & fighting a heavy cross wind both directions.
11-12 MPG seems quite low. I would be looking at carb adjustments & leaks.
I know how these little tanks can freak you out, I've only got 100 miles on this tank & it's down to 1/3 of a tank left.
I generally DON"T reset the trip meter for just that reason.
