I am getting white smoke coming from the engine and I have been troubleshooting the problem, and I think I found the leak.
I removed the heat shield and what I can see is that the smoke is coming from (at high RPM) the top of the downpipe for the exhaust and the bottom of the exhaust manifold. There looks to be a paper gasket in between, but I can't seem to find it anywhere online as a replacement part. Does anyone know where I can find it and what it is called? Is there any other options to fix this rather than disconnecting the downpipe from the exhaust manifold and replacing the gasket? Any help would be appreciated!

there are no options other than replace it. That gasket is called an exhaust flange gasket. White smoke is a concern though; it can indicate burning oil or if it's steam, a leaking head gasket.

Mark
I just came across this post - http://fluforum.italiancarclub.com/view ... hp?p=11179 where they state there shouldn't be a gasket in the 1980 FI version. It' has one in it today, but I don't think it was original from the looks of it. You mentioned the smoke concern. I may be off on the "color" - it's smoke, I used white to differentiate it from blue. I am not getting any "colored" smoke out of the exhaust. Not sure if I should be overly concerned, but any suggestions in determining if it's something I should investigate further??
Thanks for the help.

Re: Leak from Exhaust Manifold
right, an 81 shouldn't have a flange gasket but you didn't state the year of the car in the first post. If it's smoke and not steam, it's probably oil smoke

Sorry about that. It's a 1980. Would that be the same as the 81?

6 studs....the same. the 79 and later 6 stud exhaust manifold-to down pipe does not have a gasket. Metal to metal.
