Torque crank shaft pulley
Torque crank shaft pulley
My pulley came off while driving. I searched and found this has happened to others as well. I looked up the torque value and it states it should be torqued to 88 lbs. how can I torque to this value? When I try to torque the engine turns over. How can I block the engine so I can get it to the torque value?

You can do a number of things. First I have a manual that says 88 lbs and seen others that say double that. I have done many with just using my impact on them. I have never used locktight rather I use antisieze to get it off the next time. Using a good impact with full 120-130 psi and tighten till she stops is good for me. To hold the pulley I think the best is a GOOD chain wrench that will sit on the frame rail and hold. You can also make a tool or wedge a chisel or whatever to hold the flywheel. Also have seen where rope was fed down a spark plug hole on the compression stroke to stop the piston travel.

Chain wrench worked fine for me, Harbor Freight sells them pretty cheap. It was pretty easy with an extra set of hands to hold the chain wrench while I did the torqueing.

Another thing you could try is to put the car in 5th gear. set the brake, have someone hold the brakes firm and give it a try.

Re: Torque crank shaft pulley
THe 5th gear thing will not get it tight enough, too much slack tween the wheel and the crank bolt. NO fun when balancer comes off as you know. Do it right, go buy or rent a cheapy chain wrench, they are useful for lot of thing in life. Do use locknut of some sort on bolt.
Re: Torque crank shaft pulley
Thanks so much for the replies. I will go get a chain wrench and get this back on the road.
