Removing cam wheel.

Hey guys,
I have a 78 spider which had the cams and valves done by the previous owner, but I have noticed that the exhaust cam wheel has been installed in reverse. The belt retaining lip on this wheel and the one one the auxiliary shaft pulley are both on the same side so the belt could slip off if it moves in the opposite direction. I want to flip the cam wheel over but need to keep the cam shaft from turning in order to loosen the wheel nut. What is the method for this?

can't be done. You need to get the correct cam wheel for that cam

Thanks for the response, but I'm not sure you understand what I'm asking . I want to take that cam wheel off and turn it over and put it back on so the lip is on the other side. I need to know how to keep the cam shaft from turning when I loosen off the nut that's holding it on.

Mark is saying you cant flip the cam wheel over as it only fits on one way. I use an impact on mine when removing. Are the lips both on the front or back ?

You really don't even need the lip as long as your AUX pulley is the right one. Here is the setups that work:

As far as pulley setups are concerned there is a choice of the following setups:
A. Std OE pattern belt:
1. Front flanged aux d/s pulley, rear flanged inlet, front flanged exhaust
2. Rear flanged aux d/s pulley, front flanged inlet, rear flanged exhaust
3. Rear flanged aux d/s pulley, flangeless 1" (approx) cam pulleys

Any other setup is wrong and must be changed immediately.

I actually got the cam wheel off and I see what you and mark are saying... it can only fit the one way. The pulley set ups you showed me make total sense however only my exhaust cam pulley(wheel) and auxiliary shaft wheel have flanges and they are both on the same side.... (closest to the front of the car). The intake cam wheel has no flange . Has someone replaced this wheel incorrectly?

no, the exhaust and aux have the flange on the front, the intake has the flange on the back

You need a rear flange AUX pulley or rear Flange Intake pulley to be proper.

Ok, thanks guys,
I have sourced an intake camshaft gear (wheel ) from Vic Auto sports and emailed them to double check that it has the flange on the rear side . I haven't got the engine running yet but am glad I spotted that before I did or..... well you know what could have happened:>)
