Timing or distributor issues?
Re: Timing or distributor issues?
Well, it took a little longer than I wanted, but I chose to replace my distributor due to wear. I bought a remanufactured unit from A1 Cardone from MyPartsGarage (31-151) for only $140. I was a little skeptical at the price, but it was a complete unit with new magnetic pickup assembly, bearings, seals and vacuum advance. The 140 price included shipping AND a $30 core charge! You can't even buy the parts to rebuild it for that price and you don't have to screw around removing the drive gear. One thing to note if anyone else choses to go with a Cardone dizzy, they do not keep a stock of rebuilt units, they only appear to build them upon request, so it took an extra few weeks to receive the unit. Anyway, I thought I'd share my experience if anyone else is looking for an affordable distributor replacement. I really wanted Mark's distributorless system, but it would fit in my project budget right now...
So, I dropped in the reman distributor and she purrs nicely now. I still need to tweak the carb setting a bit as I still get a backfire through the intake initially during acceleration but my hesitation is gone and I can feel my power return throughout the rev range. The indicated ignition timing is now rock solid and the advance is smooth versus what I had before. Completely unrelated, but I was finally able to successfully diagnose my lack of gauge lights to a bad dimmer switch. Thank you to all the great posts regarding this subject as well. Damn PO had wires disconnected, bypassed, and spliced everywhere!
