Where to terminate Excess fuel hose (fuel return line)

Post by tanau »

Hi Gurus,

My '78 has an unterminated fuel return line, I think. I know there are two (2) lines coming from the tank. One of the terminate into the mechanical fuel pump and outlet from the pump through the filter and then onto the carburetor itself. Car gets fuel so no problem there. The other line from the tank is hanging around near my fender, looks completely lost.

After a run, I see fuel dripping out of this little hose, and down to the ground. More come out when it stops then while running. I don't know where this line should terminate to. I think it's call excess fuel return line, I believed.

Looking hard at my carb, I don't see another hole that this fuel should terminate to. I removed the carbon cannister already since we don't need it here in TX. Does anyone knows? Thanks, Tan

ps. I have a pic but don't know how to post it up here!

I posted a few pics up on Photobucket. I hope it works (link is below). The line has a funny little filter on it. The dripping is noticable and smelly of course. Certainly don't want to catch the car on fire down the road. If you can look at the pics and let me know. Also captured the actual carb itself so you what I have. Thanks again, Tan

I'm wandering around the Board and found an article which someone posted a picture that looked very similar to mine end piece. He called it "Fuel Flow Check Valve". Quick observation:

1- Fuel was topped up a couple of days ago
2- Car parked in the driveway, and pressure build up inside the gas tank
3- Fuel sizzling out of this “Fuel Flow Check Valve?” or whatever it is

So, I loosen up the gas cap and no more pressure pushing gas out. I still don’t know where this line should go and if this thing is really call Fuel Flow Check Valve. Thanks, Tan

the carb you have now doesn't use a return hose. You can either plug the hose or get a fuel filter with a return port and attach the hose there.

My guess is that you hose is connected to the wrong end of that valve and the end with the hose will look like the brass end of this pic.

I believe the brass end w/o the bulge will slide up in a hole behind and under your fuel in line. It appears that there may be a brass plug in its place.

I know my '71 has two lines here. One in and one out.

Edit. Mark knows more than I do. Go with his answer. :)

Ah... Excellent point. I didn't think that the Brass end supposed to stick out. Okay, I'll flip it around and see if there is similar round hole anywhere on the carb and try to fit it in there. I hope that will work. Definitely give it a try tomorrow morning. Thanks so much for the help. Tan

your carb isn't drilled to accept a return line, see my previous post

Thank you for Everyone that contributed. Thanks Csaba for the advise. Since my carb isn't equipt for the return fuel, I capped it off for good. Now, I will remember not to fill it up so full plus leaving the gas cap on a little loose so pressure won't build up inside the tank... Learning new things everyday with Friends support. Thank you All. Case is closed...
