79 2000 inner timing belt cover

Post by barnesjtsl »

Changing my timing belt.

On my 79 there is a metal inner timing belt cover. This thing is a pain. Can I leave it off when I put everything back together?

Thanks,

i did.... mostly because i tore it up pretty good... you will get different opinions on this question... some will say it protects the belt... others will say leave them both off .... decent arguments for all the answers... ultimately it will be your decision... but my vote is leave it off.... if i was not such a klutz and did not worry about getting tangled up when working on the car i would have left off the outside cover also.... looks cool.. lame reason.. but it looks cool

When it the first time, I didn't know it had the cover. I didn't have the tools to get the crank pully off. I used a hacksaw, snips and a screwdriver to get it so I could change the belt.

Most folks seem to leave the inner one off, and the outer one on.
