Reset timing after distributor off engine

Post by harvfiat1 »

First question is what is the gap on the
Electronic pickup for a 79 Fiat. I was given
25 thousandths. Does that sound correct?

Is there a written procedure out there
That does a step by step on resetting the
Timing?

There are notches - 2 on the inside edge
Of the cap are they the pointers for the 1 and
4 plugs?

Thanks,
Harvey

Ok I'll try... get the engine at TDC first... crank notch lined up with the longest pointer (under the water pump) at the same time the holes in the cam wheels lined up with the raised lines on the cam towers. (crank turns twice for every rotation of the cam wheels)

That done... next with the dist out of the cam tower, take a look at the rim of the dist. the plastic cap sits on.. there might be a very small notch on it. If so get the back of the rotor in line with it. This is really close to the rotor contacting the #4 pin in the cap. When putting the dist back in, it twists as the gears are lined up.(hold the rotor as installing) Take a look under the cap and see where the #4 pin is and just check the rotor is close. The wire outlet on the cap is nowhere near the pin inside.
I'm not sure what the gap is but that sounds about right. make sure the wires are clear when putting the cap back on, they could get pinched and before long short out (ask how I know :( )
Snug the 17mm nut, and with the timing light on #4 lead, set the timing to the 10 deg mark on the pointer. A little dab of white paint can make it easier to see. A stubby 17mm wrench works best to tighten.

The gap should be 0.3-0.4mm (0.012-0.016").
