Hi guys
I joined this forum about a year ago but never posted until today.
Last year I purchased a 74 124 spider thru E-bay. Fortunately the seller was only 15km down the road.
I did nothing to the engine except had it safetied in order to licence it. I've had no problems for the year but now I want to do some upkeep i.e. timing belt, valve cover gaskets etc. The previous owner was a part time dealer who buys cars at auctions and fixes them and sells them. He led me to believe it was 1600cc but now I'm not sure. As you could tell, I'm mechanically challenged so any help would be appreciated. The # above the oil filter is 132 A1 040.6 and the # below it in the same area is 0735483 ( as far as i can tell ). Can anyone tell me the size and year of the engine and what the number below it refers to. I've tried to check different sources but the # 132 A1 040.6 doesn't come up. Any help is appreciated.

By the way, I'm learning alot from the different posts and glad I joined.

the 132a1.040.4 and .5 are a 1756cc motor. i would assume your .6 is the last of this series as the next size motors dont have the 132a1 code.

Thanks for the information. So it sounds like it could be from a later model 77 or 78 ?

Yes, the .6 is the last (1977-78) of the 1756cc engines.

the .6 series is the deep flycut pistons in the 1800. this way if your timing belt breaks the valves do not hit the pistons, the worst that can happen is the valves collide with each other. seen it a few times but not many, it is also the lowest compression 1800 due to the extra volume in the flycut area

This is what the Fiat literature said, however none of the .6 1800s I've taken apart ever had those pistons.
Of course I do not know if someone had changed pistons in any of those engines along the way, but I have taken apart enough of them that one would think a few would be original.
Maybe it's just like the long 5th gears in the 79-80 Spiders that the manual shows that don't seem to exist in real life...

HA! You are right; In my 80 FI, 5th is so close to 4th that it is hardly worth using!

i have taken apart 100's maybe 1000's of fiat motors, every .6 series i took apart did have the pistons, back when i was doing this the cars and engines were original. not arguing just sharing my personal experiences
