OK I'm working on refitting original set up. When I removed the T that goes to the head, I expected to find an internal thermo but saw nothing there. Am I looking in wrong place for internal stat?

Thanks, Jay. That was going to be my second guess. Was going to check it last night but didn't think far enough ahead to get a gasket for that yet.

I installed a thermostat in the head and eliminated the external three-way monster. I connected the lower radiator hose to the water pump inlet and blocked off one leg of the "T" outlet with a rubber (neoprene) core plug from Doorman. That was 20 years ago and haven't had any issues. Some enterprising individual could probably turn a profit if he would design and market a replacement for the "T" outlet.
