diff pinion seal replacement

Post by rja »

when i removed the pinion nut to change the oil seal, it had virtually no torque on it. maybe 20-30 lbs/ft. the haynes manual(infamous toilet paper edition)said the torque should be in excess of 100 lbs/ft. what gives? should i tighten to 100; 'cuz right now it's back where it was to start with and not very tight. and what keeps the oil from leaking down the splines and flinging out? hopefully that silicone i gooped on them will. would appreciate any and all comments/info pertaining to this as i am patiently waiting to reattach the driveshaft and go for a ride. thanx, ron. :?

I just use my 1/2 impact on it, nice and tight and call it good. You got the secret to fixing the oil coming up the splines, silicone. I was changing my rear axle oil and was going to do the pinion seal but found some bearing chunks in there. Not big but enough to concern me. So now I got to check out the parts car rear end and see what drains out of that.
