The throttle linkage on a '71 is a wonder to behold isnt it? A series of rods, springs and linkages all working in perfect harmony to allow the carburetor to respond smoothly with the lightest touch of the pedal.

In other words how easy is it to swap this crap with the later version?

not too bad, you need the pedal, and pedal bushings from the late model. drill and install the pedal, then drill the hole in the firewall for the cable, i recommend welding a washer to the firewall where the cable comes thru then install the valve cover and the twist linkage. if you remove the replacement linkage from the donor car, it will be very apparent how it goes. any pedal from 75 on will work, the cable and linkage is the only difference from there

I was thinking the same thing when I took the carb off my 71 the other day. Engineering marvel! It'll be a marvel if i can remember how it all goes back after I rebuild the carb.

I always liked the system. I even modified it when i went to a dual carb set-up.

If you can rebuild that carb yourself you should have no problem replacing that linkage......

Azruss, did you make any changes to the system other than the necessary "dual" setup? What Im seeing is that a fair amount of the pedal "throw" energy is absorbed in "tightening" the system before the carb even starts moving...

I used the original pedal and hand throttle and then used a cable from a 131 with a new bracket on the valve cover to pull the carb open. This gets rid of all the sensitivity to engine rock from soft mounts, the car is immensely easier to drive and the throttle now reacts in real time...

I did some light tweeking on the linkage, but nothing crazy. My main adjustment was to make the throttle full open when the pedal was on the floor. never had any issues with surging or lunging starts. I drove the car as a daily driver for 23 years. maybe i just got used to it. As far as motor torque twist, it isnt an issue until you kick it, and at that point, who cares about sensitivity. :mrgreen:

Thanks guys, I am going to start with Azruss method to see if I cant get it to where the secondary opens up fully, if not I will start hunting down the 131 parts...

George, if you decide to switch the throttle/pedal setup I have the required pedal and pedal pivot bushings. All you would need is the cable and throttle arm that attaches to the cam box.

make sure the firewall bushing isnt worn. that's where all the play comes from

that is what I wanted to hear. I realized that the grommet was missing! The bushing was floating in the hole!

Hey George... If you need a gromet for the firewall, I just stepped outside and had a look at the 72 now parts car and have one still in it. I think I still have the arm/rod that goes into it and one piece of the linkage, but the piece that bolts onto the intake, other end of the rod, is now on the other 72 in the shop.
Let me know if you need it and a mailing address eh.
