I've got a 2l engine from my 79 spider out of the car on a stand.I'm going to change the timing belt ,seals
and water pump.Haven't had any problem getting the pulleys off the crank or the water pump but I
can't seem to loosen the auxillary shaft pulley bolt.I've tried holding the crank shaft pulley with a
chain wrench and using a breaker bar on the nut but the auxillary shaft turns .Used PB on it,waited several hours
tried again,still no go.Any ideas would be appreciated.

Use your old timing belt as a "chain wrench" to hold the aux shaft pulley. Wrap the belt around the pulley such that it folds back on itself and gets tighter as it rotates. Loop the other end of the timing belt around the other pulleys -- you'll figure out a way to make it tight. If it doesn't rip the teeth off the timing belt, you should be able to get the bolt loose.

Ok but which way does the bolt turn to loosen? I only ask because I have never had my engine running and I need to tear down the block to remove it for rebuilding. Also, does it matter if I turn the crank while the timing belt is off with the head removed and the aux shaft cannot turn with the crank?

Bolt is normal RH thread, it undoes anti clockwise. You can turn the crank with the head off, but it is possible for the aux shaft to be hit by the crank. Make sure the aux shaft timing mark is pointing at the bolt with the tensioner spring wrapped around it.eman2112 wrote:Ok but which way does the bolt turn to loosen? Thanks Alvon, the belt method worked great.In the process of changing the seals.
Just wondering if anyones bought the complete engine gasket set from IAP.i got it
for the 79 spider,all the package markings said it was for the 79,the bolt holes didn't match
up at the front of the block on the oil pan gasket (1 in. too close together).The rear crank
seal was 70mm ID instead of the 74mm I needed and it only had 4 seals instead of 5.
I'll have to call them back about the seals,talked to them about the gasket but they were
out of them and wont have any until about april.
