I am trying to rmove the pulley from the water pump off a 1978 Spider. I removed the 3 bolts on the pulley face and I was hoping it would come off. Tried penterating oil incase it was rusted. Wont budge. So i suspect i need a puller ... This is not mentioned in the Haynes manual. Can anyone tell me how to do it?
I have the same issue with my air pump ... Let me know if that is any different.
Thanks

Re: Need advise how remove water pump pulley
Had the same problem with my 1969 Spider, think it has both a different water pump & pulley than your car. Had to use a gear puller, that actually bent the pulley quite a bit. Think you want to use lots of anti-seize when you put it back together.
Re: Need advise how remove water pump pulley
Ok, i will get a puller. Probably need one that fits the 3 holes to avoid destroying pulley.
I also found that the little water channel above the impeller was clogged with deposits. The car seemed to be cooled fine. Anyone know what that water channel was cooling?

Re: Need advise how remove water pump pulley
no no no..... there is no puller needed to remove the water pump pulley on a 78 fiat spider. the pulley bolts on with 3 bolts only, a puller will ruin the pulley. the pulley at the flange is very thin, if it has stuck all that is needed is a little persuasion to get it unseated. the 3 holes are part of the water pump, if you pull from there you will ruin the water pump/
the little channel above the impeller is a direct shot to the bottom of the thermostat housing in the head, this was designed when fiat put thermostasts in the head, "the best idea"

I had the same problem a couple years ago when i first got mine. P B blaster is a life saver. Spray it let it sit overnight and lightly tap it. it should just pop off
Re: Need advise how remove water pump pulley
Both water pump and air pump pulleys came off nicely after sitting overnight with WD-40 and a few light taps all the way round with a rubber mallet. I will look into getting PB Blaster for the future. Thanks again.

Re: Need advise how remove water pump pulley
I had a similar problem with mine. Just used some liquid wrench on it and tapped the shaft with a soft mallet. Then tapped around the pulley till it was removable with a little pry with a long screwdriver from behind. Popped right off.
