compu-tronix install.

Post by azruss »

Just got my compu-tronix from Mark, and have actually read the instructions before doing anything. The question is where to install the coil pack and how to route the cables. Also the manual wasn't written for a spider. what length did you use for each plug. pix would be nice. thanks

we mount the coil in the same location as the original coil. The mount plate is drilled to fit the factory studs. That location makes the power and tach connections easy. The plug wires are numbered for each cylinder as is the coil pack

As Mark suggested, I mounted the new coil on the factory studs. I routed the signal cable from the distributor under the fuel rail and around the back of the engine to the coil pack. You could also go across the front behind the cam gear shield. As you can see, there is PLENTY of plug wire supplied so if you want to mount somewhere else, you've surely got enough length. I may go in later and cut the wires to length to neaten things up, ...or maybe not.

The pink wire from the + coil terminal goes to the red wire on the coil connector, black wire grounds to one of the mounting studs and everything from the - coil terminal connects to the purple wire. My 82FI had 3 wires connected to the negative side : tach, ECU and counter for the O2 sensor (Mark explained this to me ... I had no clue, but everything works).

Also, be sure to plug the old vacuum advance hose.

Didn't like the way the factory mount points made the unit stick above the windlace and the wiring close to the hood. one of the objectives in the conversion was getting rid of the dizzy cap and wiring intrusion on the flat hood space. So, this is what i came up with. I should be able to fire it up this weekend and set the timing.

Just curious - could you bring it all inside the cabin? Alfaholics has their ignition system on the inside of the firewall, with the ignition leads running as a bundle through a grommeted hole in the firewall. It looks wonderfully clean.

the plug wires are definitely long enough to do that. I cant think of any place under the dash where you have enough room to put the stupid thing. Behind the instrument cluster and the heater is a lost cause. Might be able to do it below the glove box where a person with big feet could kick it all the time. If you have AC then that space is gone. Above the PS map cubby is a possibility. would want to double check wire lengths for that location. I could have run the wire under the firewall top rail and covered it with an early spider wiring cover to hide some of it. To me, the FI engine compartment is not simple or elegant. I have seen some very nice mods for covering up all the junk, but seems like a lot of work for looks over functionality. My biggest beef about new cars is all the plastic you have to remove to work on something. No thank you! When i pop the hood to do something, i want to get to it.

some customers have installed the coil pack under the cowl, so that only the spark plug wires are in the engine compartment
