1608 Head on 1.8

Post by Berek »

Hey guys happened upon a head finally!! Could not pass it up for the price. Ok, so I have heard that there is a water passage (and have seen ) that is different (larger) on the 1608 in comparison to the 1.8 that it will top . Now every where I have read states that you must reduce the size of the passage in the head. And I do have instructions to do this. I have not seen the 1608 block. Having said this my next question is why is it we reduce the size of the hole in the head instead of increasing the size of the hole in the block? That would make more since to me as the return hole is tiny. Is the passage in the block bigger on the 1608 than the 1.8? Any input?

the 1608 bore spacing is closer. you have to fill the hole in the head. because the hole will be uncovered on a 1800-2000 block,(not actually, but very close, too close to work) the 1438 and 1608 share a different bore spacing than 1592 , 1756 and 1995. the head bolts all line up the same, and you can use all of the components such as camshafts, housings, manifolds all the same, there are small changes in oil and water pumps and oil pans, they wont interchange properly. in the 1608/1438 head the combustion chambers are centered over the bore, where they are offset on the bores of the 1756. 1592 and 1995

I did find an answer on here through a search on the net. There was a guy that showed the heads together and the differences.I will try to find the string later and attach here as I am sure I can't be the only one to be thinking about this.
But i'm curiouse about another hole in the 1.8 head that matches a hole in the block that is not on the 1608 but is on the 1.8 it is to the left of the hole we were originally talking about any ideas? I'm still new to all this even though i have had this poor thing a year.

but. if you want to use the 1608 head, all that has to be done is a little welding and its good to go. You weld up the port and grind it back to proper size, then surface the head

@ Beek, And after having tried to match up the 1608 head gasket...I assume that when putting the 1608 head on the 1.8 you must use the 1.8 head gasket. It looked as though the gasket for the 1.8 were going into the cylinder?

yes, have the passage welded up and use a 1800/2000 headgasket

Ok I know this is going to be a silly question...butt... would some of that steel putty they make work? not going to attemot it but was looking at the head today and thought hmmmm lol do you think it would hold? Also are the valve bigger on the 1608 as apposed to the 1756? just curiouse.
