Engine overheated

Post by JonH »

I picked up 1980 fiat 2000 turbo, 41,000 miles, the motor was over heated and the car was taken to a shop. The shop took the heads off and said the anti freeze was under the gasket and caused some corrosion on the top of the block. It looks very small, like it was scribed, 3/8 in long not very deep. I know have the car.

anyone seen this before and is there a easy fix ?

I think it depends on how deep the corosion is on the block. At the end of the day your going to need a flat block and a good flat head or you will be back in the same situation with some type if leak. I would be concerned with what actually created the coolant leak that created the corrossion. You don't want to clean everything up, ensure flastness and then have it occur again because of a porfting issue.

Can't he just take the block and head and have it shaved a little at local shop?

yes, both can be surfaced, but with varying consequences depending on how much material is removed

my plan was to take the head and have the surfaced checked and valves etc, I didn't know I could get the blocked surfaced, I will look into that and hope it's not to severe. thanks for the input.
