Exhaust smel

Post by lm48 »

I have a 2" custom exhaust system install with out cat. the system has a Botle resonator and an ansa silver line dual tip
When I drive almost at any speed I smell the fumes not much but sufficient to make me a little sick. The exhaust tip bearly exceed the back of the car. If I extend the tips do I get rid of the smell? If I leave anything in the truck after few days will have a heavy smoke smell. Any suggestion ?

My exhaust tip is about two inches past the end of the car. No exhaust fumes to be concerned about. Have you checked out the system to ensure you do not have an exhaust leak at some point near were the resonator or muffler connects. Also, do you have any white, blue/black smoke coming out of the tailpipe? If no leak it could be a running rich situation. As long as the tail pipe clears the backend you should be OK. Is there a black buildup on the metal around the tailpipe? When your hand a couple inches from the tailpipe while the car is running do you get a good feeling for the exhaust flow. I would not think a 2" custom system without a cat would have an obstruction of the flow assuming both the resonator and ANSA exhaust are 2" inch as well.
Buon giro a tutti! - enjoy the ride!

You probably have an exhaust leak. I doubt extending the exhaust would do anyhing.

others have complained about exhaust migrating into people space thru the trunk. they claim a downturn exhaust tip elimiated the probem.

In addition to finding any leaks along the exhaust path, I'd make sure you don't have any oil dripping down on the header or pipe in the engine compartment. After I fixed a few leaks and downturned my tailpipe, the level of fumes decreased but I still had some. It's hard to tell the difference between exhaust fumes and smoky oil fumes.

I would double check the distributer seal and the exhaust manifold bolts to make sure they aren't't leaking down on the manifold.

Mine did this when I put an ANSA exhaust on. Apparently the stock exhaust has a slight downward bend to get the fumes into the flow of air under the car. I did some reading and found some others with straight exhausts that have the same problem. I'm going back to a stock muffler soon.

I did find some leaks along the system. The most interesting one was around the flange between the exhaust manifold and down pipe. I welded two flanges on top of each anther on the top of the down tube. I did not realized that the exhaust fumes will travel around the attachment bolts ( welded only the outside perimeter between the 2 of them) I am also going from 2" to 2 1/4" . The home made silencer will be replace with a vibrant silencer. I will try this way first before installing any turn down tips.
