Air/smog pump and system removal

Post by AZ124Fiat »

I am curious what removing the air pump and it's system will do to my 76. Also which components need to be removed and what need to be replaced/plugged in order to do it properly.
Thank you.

it really won't make much change, other than you don't risk bending valves when the pump seizes and takes the timing belt off and will make the car about 10lbs lighter. Merely remove the pump, brackets and plumbing and plug the holes in the cylinder head

Correct me if I'm wrong, by this is all emissions equipment? I'd love more details, really want to remove excess from my 78 this winter while doing gaskets and belts.

I recently removed the smog pump setup on my 78 Spider, and I just wanted to pass on that I've found a good plug for the holes that are left in the head. They are oxygen sensor hole plugs that are 12m x 1.25 and use a 6 mm Allen wrench. I picked up four from Rock Auto for $7.81 delivered. The part number is 107-69. Hope this helps some of you.

BTW: I recommend using some teflon tape or blue loctite when installing them to ensure an airtight seal.

an O2 sensor is the same thread as a spark plug, so it should be 14mm
