Transmission Removal

Post by RDSPYDR »

First off, I would like to thank all for th einfo on the site. It has helped numerous times when working on the Spider. I was currently expecting to have the car back on the road as of June 2013, but as I am replacing/repairing deficiencies ( while staying within my monthly budget and time constraints ) I dont tink it will egt there until early 2014. But I am okay with that as I am hoping to drive it alot as soon as it is ready. :D

But onto the question. I am currently trying to get my manual transmission out of the car as I would like to put a new clutch and a lightened flywheel in the car. And yes I ahve several different manuals as well as some stuff on my laptop. I currently have everything removed according to the manual, but she doesn't seem to want to budge. What am I missing?? I have removed plenty of transmissions in the past to do clutches , but this is the first FIAT. Just hoping there isn't a trick I am missing.

On a side note - I wish I could curse in Italian because I have a few chioce word for the way they designed some things. But I do so love the time I got to drive it before she broke doen.

A little more detail would be helpful. Is the rear mount loose, and the trans won't slide back at all?
Or it moved and then won't go any more?
If fit isn't even staring then a crowbar between the block and the bell housing might get it going.

I've had to do this most times pulling the trans. Seems the tranny shaft to the pilot bearing is snug and pulling by hand was not enough to get the trans. moving.

Update: Finally got the tranny loose but the it seems that the shifter shaft won't allow me to slide the transmission back far enough as it is catching the lip of the transmission hump ( terminology might be off ). It looks like the only solution may be to remove the shifter tower to allow clearance.

Any insght would be helpful :D

Yes, the shifter stud must be removed. Remove the chrome extender so just the stud remains. from underneath, remove the triangular cover. remove carefully and keep track of how this are organized so you can put it all back together the same way. The cover is spring loaded with a light spring.
