Speedometer clicking

Post by srwilson »

I've got a Speedometer cable that is clicking. How difficult is it to change or is there something I could try before I change it that could eliminate the clicking?

Thanks

1. Loosen two bolts holding steering wheel to dash
2. Remove four thumb screws holding instrument cluster to dash and tilt toward you to gain access to speedo cable
3. Pull retaining ring away from the gauge to remove cable from the speedo
4. From under the car, remove the speedo cable from the transmission (a threaded coupling)
5. From inside firewall, pull cable through firewall and out from beneath the car
6. Do the reverse to install it

The mount between where the cable hooks to the speedo tends to break VERY easily. This is usually where the problem is. I've successfully used a hose clamp to hold everything in place and stop the clicking.

Changing it is pretty easy following spidernuts procedure. You might try pulling it out a few feet and lubricating it well with some 3-in-1 oil. I had a jumpy speedo, but only with a very slight clicking sound, and lubing it took care of the problem.

A clicky speedo is the sign of a sticky cable. It may or may not be ready to go. But I ran with a broken cable for 1 1/2 years without any problems.

That was it.

I had another cable so I swapped it out. Not to big of a job at all. And the most important part, after the job was done, No More Clicking!! :D Yeah!!!! That was driving me nuts....
