I plan to swap the motor/tranny from a '78 into my new to me '75 Spider, 1800. Below i have questions on what to do on the engine.
The cars are:
1975 Spider with blown head gasket. 97k miles and still runs (turns over) but i have never driven and I dont know how the clutch is. The drive train is really dirty and oily.
1978 Spider runs good, has even compression between 130 to 140 psi (is this normal?). Clutch seems ok. Drive train is much cleaner, amazingly NO OIL LEAKS. New fuel pump, carburetor, distributor cap.
My plans are listed below. My question is what else should I do to the replacement '78 engine while it is out of the car ... I only want to do what is cost effective, i.e., costs alot but is very important, or costs a little. Because engine doesnt leak oil and compression seems fine, I'm wondering if I dont mess with valve cover and cylinder head.
For the engine, I plan to do:
1) Timinng belt - recommended suppliers?
2) Fan belts, wires and hoses - is there a recommended kit or list of parts.
3) Check clutch and rebuild if necessary - recommened kit supplier
4) Swap oil pans from '75 to the '78 because '78 is pretty beaten - what should I inspect and/ or replace.
5) Clean and paint engine and air filter - what cleaners and paint/ finish is best.
6) Clean engine bay - plan to remove most components for repainting with entire car.
Also please recommend best factory manuals.
Thanks,

Re: Refurbishing 1975 Spider - engine swap or rebuild
i would replace the timing belt and cam seals and front crank seal, i would also replace the rear crank seal when the engine is out. the oil pan on the 75 and the 78 may be different. check the side rail, one has a kick out and one doesnt on the passenger side of the pan. check the tensioner, and the water pump too

Thanks, i will check the oil pan. I assumed because they were the same engine from 1974 to 1978 they had the same components.
I have read about inferior parts from eastern Europe, so where is a good parts source?
To check the tensioner, are we taking about checking the bearing or adjusting the belt tension?
And for the water pump, what should I look for. Normally I drive till something breaks then check it. Haha

the tensioner and the water pump, feel for smoothness when rotating them, i am refering to the bearings
