Fuel filler hose removal...any hints????
I am removing the fuel tank in my 82,as I am seeing junk in the filter. Is there a procedure for removing the fuel filler hose.I can probably get the tank out w/o removing that hose, but I have a new one to put in.I have replaced every line and hose in the fuel system and I might as well do that one too.The bottom is no issue, but I dont see how to get the top clamp off? Is the whole filler tube removed from the top? Any hint would be helpful.Thanks.Craig

Re: Fuel filler hose removal...any hints????
Unless someone replaced the hose while the filler tube was removed, there should be a way to get to the top bolt.
You did removed the protective shield and the quarter panel, right? I've been always able to get to the clamps either with a 1/4" ratchet, or a gearwrench.

Csaba, the shield is removed. What do you mean re.quarter panel? I will go out and study it a little better this morning.I got under the car and removed the shield and it didnt look like there was room to get to the top clamp.Maybe in the daylight I can see more.I am finding little clues that the fuel system/tank has been worked on before,so anything is possible.

The part between the wheel and the bumper that unbolts.
8mm nut in the fenderwell, plus 4 phillips screws.

I gotta thank you Craig. The trials you've been going through lately are helping the rest of us if/when the same happens to our car.

Re: Fuel filler hose removal...any hints????
Ron,I am glad its helping someone cause it hasnt done much for my mental state.Got it all back together yesterday, took a test ride and it was running sweet...for a couple miles. Then it just shut off, fuel pump wont energize.First time that car has ever left me stranded.I got a ride home and towed the car back.Put on my old(but suspect) fuel pump and the car wont run.WTH?? The Bosch pump is locked up completely, but the 2nd pump energizes but acts like its not pumping enough fue.Car will start but dies immediately.Came in to collect myself and watch football. Not sure what to do next! I notice on this tank I have sourced that the fuel p/u line looks a bit crimped.Could it be restricted,or do I have 2 bad fuel pumps

Re: Fuel filler hose removal...any hints????
The tank needs makeup air. Could that be the culprit?

Re: Fuel filler hose removal...any hints????
It does sound like the first pump burned itself out trying to move fuel that wouldn't flow. The fuel going through the pump cools it; no fuel flow, no cooling. This could be caused by the fuel tank not venting correctly. RRoller123 has a good point. Be careful with the 2nd pump, it wouldn't take long to burn it up also, if that's what caused it.
You did find fuel at the pump, eh?

Re: Fuel filler hose removal...any hints????
I got disgusted and left it alone.I will check it at next chance and see if I am pushing fuel. Both pumps were ones that I used when I was running crap thru the lines. They could have possibly gotten ruined with debris. All my vent lines are reattached, but I will double check that too.Thru my connections I have a pump coming tomorrow that I can try and then return.Pretty frustrated at this point.

Re: Fuel filler hose removal...any hints????
Sorry to hear that Craig.
I'm getting a little bit of gas smell in the car since I've been running the car with the top up in cooler weather. It seems like it's coming from the trunk through the rear interior compartment. So I think I may have to replace hoses and like rlux4 said, this thread will be useful when I eventually get to it. Just sorry you are having so many fuel related issues. I understand the frustration.
Good luck with the test fuel pump!

Re: Fuel filler hose removal...any hints????
Thanks Giulio.I hope it is the pump, because everything else is new and I really dont want to backtrack the whole system!! After I put the new tank and fresh gas it ran beautifully for about 10 minutes. With our fuel lines running thru the car, and entering under the drivers side rear pass. area, please pull back your carpet and make sure you dont have some sort of leak there. Is it a strong smell of raw gas?

Re: Fuel filler hose removal...any hints????
I hope so Craig.
No the smell isn't that strong, and it's not always there. There isn't much carpet (it's on the list). The main floor area under your feet is just a mat, so I just got down low to see if there was any smell there, and there wasn't. The smell seems to be coming from the rear side-panel behind the driver's side where the top tucks into. There is a similar smell in the trunk, that's why I think it's coming from the trunk area then into the inside of the car.
I would like to eventually replace all the rubber hose (and tubing if it needs to be), but I don't want any safety issues.

Re: Fuel filler hose removal...any hints????
Hopefully it is one of the vent lines that go into the left side of the tank. There are 4 of them .If they havent been changed, thats a good area to start looking. They are very easy to get to and replace.
