acc pump diaphragm replacement

Post by rja »

as my carport continually smells like gasoline, i have ordered(from one of the vendors onboard here) a replacement accelerator pump diaphragm for my '74 spider. the aforementioned petrol seems to be coming from there(dripping off the actuating arm), and has the surrounding area continually moist. i have zero experience w/the weber carburetor and said accelerator pump, so my question(s)to you more learned folk is might this be replaced in situ/without removing the carburetor from the car? does it require a gasket also, or is the gasket part of the diaphragm? and will all manner of springs, balls, and linkages come flying out at me when i remove the cover? it appears complicated in comparison to the SU's and strombergs i have formerly been associated with. thanking you in advance..... :?

the accelerator pump has its gaskets built in, when you remove the 4 screws the only thing that will fall off after you pull the stuck diaphram from the carburator is the return spring. it goes between the diaphram and the carb base. real ez, can be done on the car no problem.

The accelerator pump diaphragms tend to leak due to a warped housing cover. When you remove the 4 screws and the housing, check it on a flat surface. If its warped or cupped you will need to flatten the surface. Easiest way is to slide it over some sand paper on a flat surface like a granite counter top, table saw surface, or thick glass.
