Alternator is not aligned on my '72 2000 and...

Post by RupertSportSpider »

I have a '72 with a 2000 engine. I just got the car (see my post in the introductions forum), and it came with the alternator off the car. The PO insists it's the correct alternator.

I installed it the only way that looks possible. I don't see any way to adjust the brackets' mount to the block or the alternator mount to the brackets, or the pulley itself on the alternator. The pulley on the alternator is about a centimeter too far backwards, so the belt doesn't line up with the other two pulleys. What gives? Do I have the wrong unit, or did I screw it up?

BTW, the alternator is on the passenger side, which seems weird for the 2000 engine (?).

Also, I am trying to figure out the temp gauge sending unit thing. So there are two senders in and among the spark plugs, but they are both different? I need both? The reason I ask is that I have one in the head, and the other hole is plugged with a now-stripped Allen bolt that is gonna be really tough or impossible to get out. I'm not sure which one is in there, but if I only need one of them, then I can figure that out and make sure that's the one I have. I have the Artigue wiring diagrams.

Long post; thanks in advance!

That is where the air pump hooks up. The alt should go on the other side.

re the temp sensors
1 is for the movement of the temp needle and the other is a high temp switch that puts your needle on max, I can't recall which is which though, if your needle doesn't move as the temp rised swap them around.

The alternator is on the other side on the 2L and has the pulley set up for it, the only issue you may have is the movement of the wiring.
You can change the crank pulley to suit the alt on that side which is a fairly big job and then you water pulley may not align.

you can install a 1800 water pump pulley, that will fix the issue. the alternator and will turn a bit slower due to the pulley size difference on the crankshaft. i have done this in the past, and never had any issues with overheating or charging

Another option is to get the correct Crank Pulley from Jason at Millers mule along with the proper alternator top & bottom mounts and properly fit the alternator on the passenger side.

Yikes, well the wrong side of the engine would do it! I should be able to move the wiring without much drama, but I didn't see a place for the alternator on the driver's side. Seems easier to put the alt in the right place than to do a bunch of pulley swapping. Do any of you have a photo that shows how the alt mounts on the 2000 engine?

For the temp gauge sending units, it sounds like I really just need the sender that moves the needle and not really the one that pegs the needle, as I can probably assume that if the needle is well out of normal, it's too hot. Cool.

Thanks!

well, its on the right side of the engine for your car, the 77 on spider mounted the internal regulator alternator on the driver side, it mounts on the oil filter housing, i would keep the alternator on the correct side for your car. again my .02 is just put the waterpump pulley from your original motor on it and all should be fine

Ah, now I see what you mean with the other water pump pulley. I'll give that a shot.

It's a bit confusing figuring out how this thing is set up with the 2000 engine in the early car. I never know what wiring diagram to look at! I think the guy pulled the voltage regulator off the back of the alternator and stuck it in the stock '72 location. Not to mention the hopefully unimportant wires he left hanging around.

take me a picture of the back of your alternator. that way i can see which type you have, using an internal regulator alternator in a early car is no problem, in fact the alternator is a higher amperage and better
