Strong Gas Smell Coming from Carb
This is a strange request, but within the last month my garage has had a strong gas smell, which is now creeping into the house. It is coming from my Spider. I have replaced the fuel lines in the last two years, and so when I traced the source of my smell...it led me to...the carb???? I have one of Marks 32/36 empi's and the fume smell coming from the air cleaner is really strong... Why would this be, and what do I need to do to stop it?
Thanks
Don

I'm interested in any ideas. I have the same problem with my Weber 32/36.
And I have no visible leakage.

Re: Strong Gas Smell Coming from Carb
do the cars start in the morning without much cranking?

Re: Strong Gas Smell Coming from Carb
Mark,
I have to crank mine 3 or 4 times in order to start it in the morning. I tightened all the screws and bolts last night, some were not tight, but not sure if that is the culprit. What does the cranking point to?
Thanks,
Don

Re: Strong Gas Smell Coming from Carb
extended cranking on first start would indicate a lack of fuel in the carb

Re: Strong Gas Smell Coming from Carb
look down the venturi and see if your pump squirter is leaking. hard starting can also be caused by flooding as well.
Re: Strong Gas Smell Coming from Carb
I don't have much of a starting issue, but then I have an electric pump.
It does run poorly at first if it has only been sitting for half an hour or so. Nearly flooded but clears up quickly.
I had the same problem with the 32ADF that was on before this. That was one reason I changed it.

Re: Strong Gas Smell Coming from Carb
I am having the same problem with my DMSA. (on a '72 Spider)
Cranks for a while in the morning before it starts.
"Feels" like the carb is out of fuel.
Runs poorly until the carb fills back up.
Strong smell of gas in the car.
I was thinking that the float was not set correctly in the carb.
But now I get a strong smell of gas inside the car.
I was going to check the hard fuel lines.
Where do they run? Inside the car?
Or under?
Thanks,
Dougieb

Hi Don, is your fuel return line from the carb back to the fuel tank all connected?donerehart wrote:This is a strange request, but within the last month my garage has had a strong gas smell, which is now creeping into the house. Fi8spider,
Yes my fuel return line is connected. I believe I have taken care of the problem. Several screws on the carb had vibrated loose...upon tightening the fuel smell has gone away. It is still hard to start if it has set for a day or longer...
Thx,
Don

Re: Strong Gas Smell Coming from Carb
the only feasible spot for a leak is the accelerator pump diaphragm or cover
Re: Strong Gas Smell Coming from Carb
I'm also having a hard start in the monrings and a strong gas smell in the garage after you park it. I found the rubber line from the bottom of the charcoal canister to the hard line on the frame was rotten and broken in two spots. I havent had a chance to fire it up again to see what changes it'll have, but hopefully will at least solve the gas smell problem.

Re: Strong Gas Smell Coming from Carb
Issue Resolved: My carb mounting bolts had worked themselves loose, as well as some of the screws on the carb. When I tightened them up, the smell went away immediately. I had to then adjust the carb timing because the fuel/air ratio was different... So, thanks for the help and ideas... It actually even starts up easily now after sitting for several days!
