Mystery Fuel Problem

Car was running for several minutes, carb was getting fuel. Then when we restarted, no fuel to the carb. Seems like a fuel pump issue, but we took it out and tested it by hand - it pumped fuel from one hose and out the other.

We tested all lines. The pump has been out of the engine for over a year. I guess it could have deterioted due to lack of use.

Question #1: is that a reliable fuel pump test, or should I buy a new fuel pump?

Question #2: should I go with a elec fuel pump instead of the mechnical type?

Are you sure you have good fuel flow up to the pump? Filter's not clogged? No kinked lines? Hopefully, it's a simple problem and you don't need to go to the expense and effort of a new pump.

typically, once pump diaphragms dry out, they'll work for awhile then fail as the diaphragm swells up, then tears. Fuel lines on the suction side of the pump will suck air if they're cracked. So as Ron suggested, check all of the lines from the tank to the pump

Mechanical pumps are pretty reliable and saves the hassle of wiring an electric pump in.

Fuel problem solved. We checked the fuel lines before, but, I guess not close enough.

We put a new fuel pump in first, still no fuel. So we blew compressed air back to the gas tank and found a small pin hole in the hard line near the rear. put on a new flexible fuel line from the gas tank to the hard line and covered the pin hole with the fuel line. Miracle
