Resolved and I am Baaaack!!!!!!!!!

Post by ga.spyder »

 :D :D :D :D :D
I have my faithful 82 up and running again.YEEEEEE-HAWWWW!! I have been having a problem getting the injector rail back in.I stepped back and took a long look. The outer seals just wouldnt go into the retainer ports.I looked at one of the originals and it was visibly smaller!I swapped in a set of smaller seals and the rail slid into place.Fired right up ,good, idle, and good at high rpm.I tied up all the temporary fuel lines with zip ties  and hit the road.Like a new car.Much improved throttle response.I still need to run new lines and decide if I want to mess with the tank.I also have the red alt. light glowing and the tach is jumping. I didnt really look into it,but I have had a lot of stuff off and on the car.Could those two symptoms be related?
The actual culprit in all this was the hard fuel line.It is rusting from the inside, dumping debris into the fuel rail.I had 2 injectors clogged, one almost completely.I changed #4 ,but it was still running bad. This was because #2 was over 50% clogged!I am changing the fuel and return line and putting a new filter and my old Bosch pump back on(my spare works fine but is noisy).
I want to say thanks to everyone here who followed this ordeal. The advise I get here is all I have to go by.I have never had any issues with this car,so I was pretty lost when the normal things didnt solve the problem.I need to single out Mark,Robert,Chris,Brad, and Keith. You guys are the best!!!

I'm glad you have found the problem. Although I have a carberated 1800 I have been following closely. It seems like it is always the simple things, it's just trying to figure out which one it is.

Glad to hear it craig!! My spider has been down for 3 weeks too. Should be back on road tomorrow. Master cylinder seals went and after getting new cyl I couldn't get new brake line ends anywhere. Ordered from fed hill then the hurricane hit up north and my package was stuck in transit. Parts finally arrived and had to work everyday since.. congrats on aolving your problem. Matt

great news! We've seen many of the large seals need trimming to work on the Spider. The odd thing is they fit an X just fine

Craig,

Happy to hear that you are back on the road! I highly suggest that you take care of the tank even if it doesn't look too bad. Can you imagine going through this again?

Craig,
Congratulations!
For future reference for all of us FI guys, did the too-large seals come from the injector refurb company you used? Where did you source the correct sized ones?

Thanks guys.I spoke with the guys from OK Injectors, and they had no clue that the seals didnt fit. They had done other Spiders and no one had ever said anything. They were extremely apologetic, and said they would match the seals from now on.Odd,like Mark said, that they work on the X1/9s perfectly :? Anyway,I told them that I was extremely happy with the service and held no ill feelings.Really nice group.
I bought a injector O ring assortment from Autozone in the Help! aisle. They were $9.00 and they are the square shouldered type like IAP sells.Enough to do all injectors front and back. The larger ones that were on mine from the injector place were in the kit also.Held sisde by side, the difference is small but obvious.Just enough!!!

I am so glad to hear you're back on the road Craig! AT least you sorted out the issue before putting her away for winter. Looking forward to seeing you drive in the spring.

I've had some of those bogus injector seals, I wish I could remember which brand was bad and which one fit.

Congrats on getting the issue resolved Craig. I don't know when the driving season ends down in GA, but hopefully you get to exercise the Spider a bit before you put it away for the winter.

Thanks Tim.Depending on the severity of the winter,I can usually get some driving in even during the worst months. We had almost no snow last year, the year before was awful!I am in the process of installing a new fuel and return line,I may or may not replace the tank also. The car seems to be running well and she will be definitely be ready for Spring.
