Importance of CO testing??

How important is the CO testing analyzer? I replaced the temp sensor today hoping that this would help with the overly potent exhaust smell. Smells rich. My clothes smell awful after idling the car in the garage with the door open for a few minutes. I already checked the thermo time switch and cold start injector. The car runs very well and idles smoothly, but has high (20mpg) fuel consumption and stinks. Curious about other adjustments to the FI system I should be checking.

Exhaust also has moisture spitting out of tailpipe. Looks kind of rusty at first and then very clean moisture after a minute. I guess moisture is a biproduct of the combustion engine, but the rust makes me nervous. Probably need to replace the exhaust too.

Oil looks fine and just changed the coolant and there is minimal oil streaking so I'm pretty certain the head gaskets are fine and as mentioned earlier the car runs great.

I wouldn't consider 20mpg as excessive fuel consumption, it's a tad low, but maybe 10% less than ideal. I feel CO testing is very important, it's very easy to be overly rich and not realize it. You're going to need some test equipment though, otherwise it's a crap-shoot

You don't think these cars should be getting closer to 25-28 MPG? How can I get the testing equipment?

I already realize that the car is running rich due to the exhaust smell. What can I do about that? I really want to get the finishing touches on this beauty. I want her to run clean, not stink up the block and have a very efficient runner.
